ikono.tv stands for the idea of making the visual arts accessible to the public and caters to the innovative presentation of pieces from artists and cultural institutions. Collaborating with professional art historians, creative producers, artists, and editors, ikono.tv presents a wide field of cultural heritage from antiquity through the renaissance and modern to the contemporary, giving the audience a wide access to paintings, videos, architecture and design. The central element of ikono.tv's philosophy is a pure visual experience of art, abstaining from commentary and additional audio during broadcast. Visual art has a language of it's own. It inspires, causes controversies, creates cultural exchange and crosses all borders. ikonoMenasa is currently available via satellite transmission in an HD-TV channel, the Internet, on mobile devices through our online shop, and the in-flight entertainment of Air France.

The Querini Stampalia Foundation

The Querini Stampalia Foundation was founded in 1869 by the will of Count Giovanni, the last descendant of the patrician family ... Querini Stampalia. The Foundation is located in the very same Querini Stampalia's ancient palace of the sixteenth century, where the family's heritage is preserved: a library containing about 340,000 volumes, with a historic section composed of manuscripts, incunabula and 16th century printed books, and a museum, with furnitures, porcelains, bisques, sculptures and paintings from the 14th to the 20th century. Inside the 16th century residence, at ground level, are the area and the garden, that have been restored in the early 60s by Carlo Scarpa. Recently Mario Botta designed the new access, bookshop, cafeteria and auditorium. The Foundation organizes exhibitions, conferences, meetings, seminars and collaborations with contemporary artists who are invited to interact with the Foundation's collection.

Sama Alshaibi

Selected Works

Sama Alshaibi is an artist born in Basra, Iraq to an Iraqi father and Palestinian mother and now a naturalized US citizen. ... Alshaibi's works in photography, video art and sculpture to evoke the language of suffering, displacement and loss. Her auto-ethnographic approach is informed by her own history of living in war and the double negation to her familial homelands. Alshaibi is interested in the spectrum of control and domination, whether its the body's relationship to land and national identity, or the experience between humans competing for resources and power. Her work is rooted in the anxieties of the human experience. Alshaibi's work has been exhibited at arts institutions and galleries in over twenty countries, including Impressions Gallery (UK), Exit Art (NYC), Mole Vanvitelliana (Italy), Darat Al-Funun (Jordan), The Bronx Museum (NYC) and the Museum of Contemporary Art (Denver). She is represented by Selma Feriani Gallery (London) and Lawrie-Shabibi Gallery (Dubai). In addition to exhibitions, her 25 time-based works (video art/films) have screened in numerous film festivals internationally including the Thessaloniki International Film Festival in Greece, CinemaEast Film Festival (NYC), DOKUFEST (Kosovo) and Les Instants Video festival (France). Her art has been curated into prominent international art fairs including Paris Photo (France), ArtDubai (U.A.E), Reel Festival Iraq (Scotland) and Pingyao International Photography Festival (China). Sama Alshaibi received her MFA from the University of Colorado in Photography/Video and Media Arts in 2005. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Photography/Video Art at University of Arizona.

Charlotte Cotton

Charlotte Cotton is the creative director of Media Space, a partnership between the Science Museum and the ... National Media Museum, UK that will open in London in 2012. Previously, she was the head of the Wallis Annenberg Department of Photography at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, head of programming at The Photographers' Gallery and curator of photographs at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. She is the author of the best selling The Photograph as Contemporary Art and the founder of Wordswithoutpictures.org
For ikonoTV, she chose the Californian video artist Owen Kydd, who bridges the two worlds of photography and video. He uses a photo-documentary style, but with subjects that move only slightly. Presently his practice consists of making these durational photographs. The artist says about his work: "If there is a potential of video for genre or historical picture making, then the form itself, which is a visual duration, should intervene with the photo-documentary subject. Video may have the potential to both record and disrupt the still image - to introduce elements of the unknown to photography. Instead of mythologizing, dominating or imprisoning moments, it can allow subjects to escape the totalizing nature of the still frame, and can create a new distance from the viewer. (..) With cameras that are now both video and photographic, the line between the two types of image is immediatly blurred with the turn of a dial. I am interested in making video that uses the codes and signifiers of American Documentary Photography, to test this boundary and investigate a new medium's potential to adapt to communities that are in flux."
