ikono is a media platform displaying and broadcasting visual arts, founded in 2006 by Elizabeth Markevitch. Through its two HDTV channels, ikonoMENASA (since December 2010) and ikonoTV (since December 2011) ikono broadcasts a unique program dedicated to the arts of all epochs from antiquity to contemporary art – 24/7 and in HD.
ikono’s program is shaped and produced in cooperation with more than 400 international artists and over 200 collections and archives and the most important museums of the world. All productions are free from additional sound or commentary making it possible for an international audience to have a pure visual and emotional art experience.
The HDTV channels ikonoMENASA and ikonoTV are viewable in more than 30 countries worldwide (average technical HD reach: 37 million households). To complete the TV program, a rich background of information is published on the homepage www.ikono.org and on digital platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Vimeo, Youtube, Daily Motion and Arte Creative.
ikonoMENASA, ikono’s first television channel, broadcasts on a 24-hour basis in the MENA region and parts of South Asia featuring high definition short films showcasing a wide variety of visual art. ikono works with curators, filmmakers and artists to produce films about art from antiquity until the contemporary period, with no added sound or narrative elements to distract from the art works. ikonoMENASA focuses a portion of its programming on art from the region, ranging from 14th century Persian miniatures to contemporary video artists.
Since 2010, ikonoMENASA has been broadcasting in the Middle East and North Africa via ArabSat, in the United Arab Emirates through Etisalat on channel 484, and is now available in Dubai through du on channel 410 as well as in Beirut via Solidere IPTV on channel 232
ikonoTV, ikono’s second channel, broadcasts in high definition through Deutsche Telekom Entertain on Channel 458
Following the same philosophy as ikonoMENASA, ikonoTV features high definition short films about the arts, broadcasted on a 24-hour basis. Each film presents artworks selected from a wide spectrum of styles, mediums, and time periods, with no added music or narrative elements to distract from the visual experience. ikono works closely with curators, art historians, and filmmakers in the continuous production of new programming, bringing a diversity of cultural and artistic expression from around the globe to the screen.
If you are one of many who already have Telekom’s IPTV box, you can watch ikonoTV’s 24/7 live broadcast on channel 458.
