Stephen Colbert Exposes Himself to Art (the Appropriate Way)

Arts Beat: “For some reason, Steve Martin’s visits to “The Colbert Report” always seem to bring out the erudite side of its host, Stephen Colbert. Back in December, when Mr. Martin came on to evaluate a portrait of Mr. Colbert, the segment turned into an art party crashed by Frank Stella, Shepard Fairey and Andres Serrano (not the sort of folks one expects to see just before midnight on Comedy Central). And when Mr. Martin returned to the show on Monday night, Mr. Colbert used the occasion to visit his portrait at the Phillips de Pury & Company gallery in Manhattan (where it was sold at a recent auction) and to subject the auction house chairman, Simon de Pury, to a typically tongue-in-cheek grilling. (Be prepared to find out who Mr. de Pury’s favorite rap artist is!)”
