As hinted earlier this week, Amazon has now officially announced the opening of their special department for contemporary art.
Amazon contacted a number of art galleries to invite them to a meeting in New York this Wednesday where it unveiled a new project called the “Amazon Fine Art Gallery” which will be available as of Summer 2013. Quite a lot of galleries will be featured on this new website then and it looks like Amazon is mainly interested in smaller and mid-level galleries looking for more visibility, but not too many details are known yet.
The Amazon Fine Art Gallery must sound like a declaration of war to sites like Artsy.net (which offers more than 30.000 artworks by 6.000 artists) and small online dealers trying to make a living. We keep you informed when we know more.
