Daniel von Sturmer

Daniel von Sturmer – Colour Bars Daniel von Sturmer was born 1972 in Auckland, New Zealand. He lives and works in Sydney, Australia. Daniel von Sturmer represented Australia at the 52nd International Art Exhibition, the Biennale di Venezia 2007. The Biennale wrote about his show: “With The Object of Things, von Sturmer continues his ‘experiments with space’, he has constructed video installations and architectural interventions especially designed for the Australian Pavilion in the Giardini. These new works aim to test how it is we see what we see, bringing the unique spaces of the Pavilion into play. Video sequences confound viewers’ sense of space, scale and orientation through experiments with gravity and weightlessness, movement and stillness.” (52nd International Art Exhibition, Biennale di Venezia 2007, June 9, 2007) The Australia Council wrote: "Von Sturmer’s work spans cinematic, artistic and architectural frames of reference drawing connections between different practices. Over a two year Visual Arts Board fellowship program, awarded in 2010, von Sturmer’s research opened up new territory for the interdisciplinary artist. This included exploration into areas of practice such as photographic work and new modes of video production; through a sustained and focussed period of studio research the artist had the possibility to reconsider some fundamental starting points in the development of works."

Daniel von Sturmer has exhibited at numerous international public venues including the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA), Melbourne; Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego; the Gothenburg Museum of Art, Sweden; the Hamburger Bahnhoff Museum, Berlin and Auckland Art Gallery. In 2004, Daniel featured in the 14th Biennale of Sydney, On Reason and Emotion. Recent solo exhibitions include The Field Equation at ACCA, Melbourne (2006); Set Piece (2009) at Site Gallery, Sheffield; The Cinema Complex (2010) at Anna Schwartz Gallery, Sydney; and Daniel von Sturmer: Video Works (2010) at Karsten Schubert, London.
