Curator’s Bio

With over 20 years experience as curator and writer, Berta Sichel has a deep knowledge of contemporary art with a focus on media-based works. Currently she is the Artistic Director for the International Biennial in Cartagena de Indias (Colombia). Prior she was for 11 year the Director of the Audiovisuals Department and Chief-Curator of Film, Video and Performance for Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid (2000-2011), she developed a highly innovative program and in-depth historical video collection, which received broad international recognition. Additionally, Ms. Sichel has curated a multitude of international exhibitions including the Sao Paolo and Venice Biennials, written for major art magazines, countless catalog essays, and edited several books.  Amongst her numerous awards and fellowships is a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship(1998) and was duly recognized for her curatorial trajectory by the Spanish Association of Women in the Arts(2000).  Ms. Sichel holds Doctorate and MA in Media Ecology from the Department of Media, NYU, and an MA in Communications Systems from Universidade Federal, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She currently lives in Madrid.
