This Friday Focus presents highlights from the current Venice Biennale. Since it’s inception in 1895 , it has been one of the most important events in the art world.In 2011 the 54th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale is directed by the art historian and critic ce Curiger. This year’s theme is ILLUMInazioni – ILLUMInations, featuring 83 artists from all over the world, including 32 young artists born after 1975, as well as 32 women artists. The Exhibition will be paralleled by 89 National Participations, a record for the Art Biennale (there were 77 in 2009). The countries participating for the first time are Andorra, Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh and Haiti.Presented on ikonoMenasa are a selection of country pavilions – amongst them the inaugural pavilions of Saudi-Arabia and Bangladesh. Returning participants such as Iraq, the United Arab Emirates or Egypt are being shown as well as the examples of the well established presentations such as Italy and Germany.In addition, ikonoMenasa is highlighting a number of collateral events and exhibitions – an installation by Chiharu Shiota, the tapestry exhibition “Penelope’s Labour: Weaving Words and Images” at Giorgio Cini Foundation or the impressive installation “TRA- the Edge of Becoming” at the Fortuny Museum. The Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale is open from 4th June to 27th November 2011
